Dowd Art and Art History Building Gallery to see The Great Wave\, curated by Ann Trinca (who curated Creative Attention). \nNext\, we’ll visit NUMU in Los Gatos for a special installation tour with artist Kathy Aoki and a walkthrough of their exhibition Terra Firma with Marianne McGrath (the upcoming curator of Food for Thought at the Art Center). We’ll end the day with a toast at Gali\, a local Los Gatos tasting room. \n\n2:00 p.m.—Arrive at Santa Clara University for a tour of the Edward M. We will also highlight more established favorites such as the San Diego Museum of Art\, the Riverside Art Museum\, and many more. \nYou’ll unwind during a luxurious stay at the Pasea Hotel & Spa in Huntington Beach\, which offers breathtaking views and stunning accommodations just steps from the sand and sea. \nThis autumn getaway will please your palette\, engage your artistic curiosity\, and inspire the explorer within you. \nCheck out the culinary highlights of the trip HERE. \nOUR SCHEDULE: \nDay One\, October 13\, Arrival: Fly into San Diego\, Ca \nWe’ll start our trip in San Diego\, visiting the recently renovated Museum of Contemporary Art\, San Diego in La Jolla\, including its new building and special exhibit Alexis Smith: The American Way\, the first showcase of this artist’s work in 30 years. We will be treated to a director-led overview of San Diego’s premiere contemporary Art Gallery Quint before lunch at Puesto\, a top-10 San Diego taquerria. \nWe will then visit Bread and Salt\, an experimental arts center housed in a former Wonder Bread factory\, make a brief stop at the Chicano Park National Historic Landmark\, before spending the rest of the afternoon at the majestic and historic Balboa Park and its many museums\, including the newly renovated Mingei International Museum\, the Museum of Photographic Arts\, and the Timken Museum\, home to a collection of masterworks by Vermeer\, Rembrandt and many more. \nWe will dine at Chef Travis Swikord’s Callie restaurant in the trendy East Village area before enjoying the sunset views from the road on our way to our stunning beachfront resort\, Pasea Hotel. \nDay Two\, October 14\, Los Angeles County: \nEnjoy an exclusive tour of the collection of Stewart and Lynda Resnick\, the CEOs of The Wonderful Company\, who are among LA’s top art collectors. After lunch at Pine and Crane\, we will spend sme tme in the downtown Los Angeles art district and visit multiple independent LA galleries including Vielmetter\, Gavlak\, and Patricia Sweetow‘s new LA outpost. We then will head east to visit Claremont to visit the American Museum of Ceramic Art\, exhibiting a major survey Breaking Ground: American Women in Ceramic Art through 1990 and explore the Ruth Chandler Gallery at Scripps College and the Benton Museum of Art Pomona College. We will head to We will dine at a top local restaurant before returning to enjoy cocktails and the beach at our hotel. \nDay Three\, October 15\, Orange County: \nWe will start our day at UC Irvine Jack and Shanaz Langson Institute and Museum of California Art\, and see the extraordinary Irvine Collection of early California impressionists and The Buck Collection fo California art. We will be treated to a special tour of the Dissolve exhibition by curator and UCI Professor Bridget R. Cooks\, Ph.D. (who many will remember from  The Black Index exhibition). This show features commissions by local artist Linda Gass and Black Index and Creative Attention exhibition artist Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle). \nWe continue working our way up the coast\, exploring the California Biennial exhibition\, revived after a long hiatus\, at the newly reopened Orange County Museum of Art. After an amazing day of art\, we will return to the beach for happy hour and a group dinner at Tanner’s\, an oceanfront restaurant featuring California Coastal cuisine. \nDay Four\, October 16\, Riverside & Departure: \nWe will be among the first to visit an impressive and important new museum and collection\, “The Cheech” in Riverside. Cheech Marin\, of Cheech and Chong fame\, has amassed one of the most important collections of Chicano Art and dedicated a museum to sharing it. \nWhile in Riverside\, we will also visit the Riverside Art Museum to see the work of the De La Torre Brothers from the northern Baja region of Mexico and dine at the famous and historic Mission Inn Hotel and Spa\, once home to a bohemian art colony. Finally\, our luxury coach bus will take us to the airport to catch our flight home. \nLODGING: \nPasea Hotel & Spa\, Meritage Collection\, Huntington Beach\, California – October 13– October 16 (3 nights) \nFLIGHTS:  \nFlights are not included in the cost of this trip. We recommend flying into San Diego International Airport on Thursday morning\, Oct 13. We will be flying from Ontario Airport to San Jose on Sunday\, Oct. 16th. We recommend booking your return flight after 4:30 p.m. on October 16. She has made a commitment to uplift the voices of the populations she engages and to help them embrace their rich cultural identities.  \nDuring this workshop\, you will get to Make a Movie Poster of Your Life. Have fun designing the art for the cover of the movie about your life\, or a section of your life so far—is it a romantic comedy? A thriller? An action film? What’s the title? Using the power of artistic creative expression and the reclaiming of our stories\, we can move towards empowerment and healing.

The exhibition will showcase alternatives to our chaotic world of stress and anxiety\, through practices of mending\, healing\, restoration\, belonging\, sustainability\, and resiliency. \nSome of the work that will be included in the exhibition looks inward—addressing past personal struggles with illness\, addiction\, and loss. Other artists turn their attention outward to connect with those who are suffering and to find solidarity in our shared adversity. Universally\, what begins in the studio alters the life of the artist\, who in turn brings that change to the world. \nArtists in the exhibition will include: Johnna Arnold\, Lynn Beldner\, Wes Bruce\, Caledonia Curry (SWOON)\, Paz de la Calzada\, Angela Hennessy\, Alexander Hernandez\, Jeremiah Jenkins\, Corita Kent\, Tucker Nichols\, Marcel Pardo Ariza\, Maria Paz\, Jessi Rado\, Leah Rosenberg\, Lisa Solomon\, Esther Traugot\, Christine Wong Yap and Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle. \nThe exhibition will feature several site-specific installations\, including: a wall painting by Paz de la Calzada featuring plants collected in nearby City of Palo Alto Community Gardens; a site-specific collection of Flowers for Sick People\, a multimedia art and health project by Tucker Nichols; an immersive installation by Wes Bruce exploring the meditative and healing properties of water; and Expanding Space Project\, a project that combines meditation\, photography\, and social practice by Johnna Arnold. \nThe Creative Attention exhibition is part of a larger initiative that includes artist residencies\, community art therapy workshops\, and wellness programs. Christine Wong Yap will engage local teens and seniors in a residency project focused on places of belonging in Palo Alto and East Palo Alto\, resulting in a site-specific Belonging Map that will be installed in the galleries beginning in March. Marcel Pardo Ariza will work in residence with the Avenidas Senior Center’s Rainbow Collective\, hosting a series of workshops celebrating intergenerational LGBTQ+ personal stories. Art therapist Anh Tran will work in collaboration with community partners Dreamcatchers\, Stevenson House\, and Palo Alto Housing on a series of free art therapy workshops. Free wellness programs will also be presented during the run of the exhibition. \nSpecial events\nIn conjunction with the exhibition\, the Art Center will provide in-person and online programs: \nFriday Night at the Art Center opening reception—Friday\, January 28\, 2022\, 6-8 p.m.\, FREE\nJoin us at the Art Center for a special celebration of Creative Attention. DESCRIPTION:Join us on an art\, history\, and civil rights tour of Montgomery\, Selma\, and Birmingham\, Alabama\, from Wednesday\, April 27-Monday\, May 2\n\n\n Join us for a unique opportunity to explore the difficult past and enduring impact of the civil rights movement\, through art\, history\, and memorial. This tour will showcase the stories\, personal reflections\, and cultural contributions of the people who call Montgomery\, Selma\, and Birmingham their home. Anchored by the opening reception of Lava Thomas’ retrospective exhibition Homecoming\, curated by Bridget R. Cooks (curator of The Black Index)\, and featuring visit to Bryan Stevenson’s Equal Justice Initiative Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice\, this travel opportunity promises inspiration\, learning\, and reflection. \nThroughout our trip\, we will be highlighting some of the best of the area’s art\, culture\, dining\, and outdoor spaces. Spring is a lovely time of year to experience the South. You won’t want to miss this opportunity—space is limited! \n \nOUR SCHEDULE: \nDay One\, April 27\, Arrival:  \nFly in to Montgomery\, Alabama. \nDay Two\, April 28\, Montgomery: \nWe will begin our tour in Montgomery with Black artist\, activist\, and recent recipient of USA Today’s Woman of the Year Michelle Browder. Michelle will welcome us with a reception influenced by the African Diaspora. She will then escort us on a private tour of cultural and historic sites throughout the city\, including the home of Rosa Parks\, the Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum\, Southern Poverty Law Center\, and the Alabama State Capitol. After a tour of historic neighborhoods in the City\, we will stop for lunch with storyteller Chaplain Browder.  We will then visit The Mothers of Gynecology Park\, a memorial honoring the enslaved women who endured painful experiments by the father of gynecology\, J. Marion Sims. Later that evening\, we will attend the opening reception of Homecoming: Lava Thomas at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. We will end the evening with dinner at the highly regarded Vintage Year restaurant. \nDay Three\, April 29\, Montgomery: \nWe will spend the next day exploring the important Equal Justice Initiative Legacy Museum\, founded and led by acclaimed public interest lawyer Bryan Stevenson\, the author of the book Just Mercy and subject of the recent film of the same name. Located on the site of a former slave warehouse\, the museum charts the history of enslavement to mass incarceration. After lunch\, we will visit the companion National Memorial for Peace and Justice\, the only national memorial acknowledging the more than 4\,400 men\, women\, and children victims of racial terror and lynching. These two sites were named Alabama Tourism’s 2019 Attraction of the Year. \nDay Four\, April 30\, Selma: \nThis day will involve a full-day private coach journey to Selma\, over the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge\, to view the Brown Chapel AME Church—the site of the “Bloody Sunday” confrontation. Other stops will include historical venues and selected Selma art galleries. We will also meet with the women of Gee’s Bend to learn more about their quilts and their family stories. The day will end in Birmingham\, a lively city of cultural and historical attractions. \nDay Five\, May 1\, Birmingham:  \nExploring Birmingham\, we will start with a southern brunch\, then visits to sites that include the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument Park\, and the 16th Street Baptist Church\, location of the 1963 bombing. We will visit the Birmingham Museum of Art along with a visit to a private collection or gallery. The day will end with a special treat—dinner at Automatic Seafood and Oysters\, where chef Adam Evans was recently named one of the semifinalists of the 2022 James Beard Awards. \nDay Six\, May 2\, Birmingham\, and Departure: \nOn our final day\, we will visit the largest cast iron observation tower in the world—created from 100\,000 pounds of iron standing 45 feet tall—at Vulcan Park and Museum. We will also visit Kelly Ingram Park\, which features emotionally powerful sculptures depicting the civic rights struggle in Birmingham. If time allows\, we look forward to exploring the historic loft district and shopping at the Homewood neighborhood and Pepper Place—a new shopping area in a former warehouse. \nWe recommend an afternoon or evening flight departure.  \nLODGING: \nRenaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa at the Convention Center\, Montgomery\, Apr 27-30 (three nights)—This downtown hotel located along the riverfront area boasts stunning architecture highlighted by modern amenities\, a spa\, and a rooftop pool. \nThe Tutwiler Hotel Hampton Inn & Suites\, Birmingham\, Apr 30-May 1 (two nights)—The Tutwiler has been selected for both the Mobil Travel Guide Four-Star and AAA Four Diamond awards. Built in the 1920s\, the Tutwiler Hotel is a showplace in the heart of Birmingham’s vibrant business and financial districts. \nFLIGHTS: \nFlights are not included in the cost of this trip. We recommend flying in to Montgomery\, Alabama on April 27. We recommend booking your return flight from Birmingham\, Alabama after 4 p.m. on May 2. DESCRIPTION:Join the Palo Alto Art Center Foundation for a day-long art experience to Sacramento on Saturday\, March 26. Hop on a luxurious coach bus in Palo Alto with your fellow Foundation members and art enthusiasts as we journey to the state capitol. We start our day with a self-guided tour of the current exhibitions at the beautiful new Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art on the UC Davis campus; to be followed by a boxed lunch at a lovely courtyard adjacent to the Crocker Art Museum. Matt Isble\, Exhibition Designer from the Crocker Art Museum and Founder of MuseumTrade.org will give us a private walkthrough of the current exhibition The Candy Store—a recreation of the legendary Folsom gallery where so many Funk artists\, including Robert Arneson\, Clayton Bailey\, and David Gilhooly got their start. DESCRIPTION:Creative Attention Artist Residency Conversation with Christine Wong Yap and Marcel Pardo Ariza\n\nCreative Attention Artist Residency Conversation with Christine Wong Yap and Marcel Pardo Ariza\nJoin our Creative Attention artist residents for a virtual presentation about their work and their residencies in conjunction with Creative Attention.\nMarcel Pardo Ariza (b. 1991\, Bogotá\, Colombia) is a trans visual artist and curator that explores the relationship of representation\, kinship and queerness through constructed photographs\, color sets and installations. Their practices celebrate the so-called erroneous\, navigate intergenerational connection\, and question arbitrary paradigms while pushing against the boundaries of photography. Their work has recently been exhibited at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art; Richmond Art Museum; San Francisco Arts Commission Galleries; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts; Palm Springs Art Museum; and the Institute of Contemporary Art San José. Ariza is a former member of the Curatorial Council at Southern Exposure\, a co-founder of Art Handlxrs\, and a studio member at Minnesota Street Project.\nChristine Wong Yap (she/they) is a visual artist and social practitioner working in community engagement\, drawing\, printmaking\, publishing\, and public art. She partners with organizations to conduct participatory research projects to explore dimensions of psychological wellbeing such as belonging\, resilience\, interdependence\, and collaboration. She has participated in over a dozen residencies and studio programs. DESCRIPTION:Join artist Charlene Chow and learn the basics of basket weaving.\n\n\nJoin artist Charlene Chow and learn the basics of basket weaving. In this two-hour workshop participants will complete their own coaster or small bowl-shaped basket. Using cotton rope and yarn students will receive an introduction to coil basketry using traditional techniques that they can then try at home. \nMaterials fee is $10 payable to instructor at start of workshop and includes all the supplies you will need. Students may also bring any standard size yarn that excites or inspires.
