2025 Trip - Mexico City & Oaxaca, Mexico!
Vibrant Art, Rich History, and Culinary Delights Await in Mexico!
Monday, JANUARY 13 - Sunday, JANUARY 19 2025
Join the Palo Alto Art Center Foundation for an exciting journey exploring the richness of Mexican art, history, and culinary traditions. This year’s international travel experience will highlight the vibrancy of Mexico City and the colorful heritage of Oaxaca, where you’ll encounter celebrated contemporary art and traditional crafts.
Our adventure begins in Mexico City, a cosmopolitan hub filled with museums, historic sites, and a thriving gastronomy scene. Highlights include a scenic boat ride through the canals of Xochimilco, a visit to the Diego Rivera Museum, and a tour of the famous Casa Azul, the former home of Frida Kahlo. We will also explore modern and contemporary art and architecture at Museo Jumex and Museo Soumaya.
Next, we journey to Oaxaca, where we’ll delve deeper into the region's artisanal heritage. Building on last year’s memorable visit, we will discover new perspectives on Oaxacan culture, including the intricate black pottery of San Bartolo Coyotepec, the distinctive red pottery of San Marcos Tlapazola, exquisite silk weaving at the Silk Museum, and the rich weaving traditions in Teotitlán del Valle.
Throughout our travels, we’ll savor Mexico’s culinary offerings, from the bustling food markets of Mexico City to authentic Oaxacan dishes. Luxury accommodations await at the iconic Camino Real in Mexico City and the stylish Hotel Azul in Oaxaca City, where you can unwind each evening and appreciate the day’s discoveries.
Led once again by Zapotec historian Dr. Xochitl Flores-Marcial, this tour offers unique insights into Mexico's Indigenous traditions and contemporary culture. With an itinerary crafted to provide both learning and leisure, you’ll have ample opportunity to explore, shop, and connect with local artisans.
