SUMMARY:Friday Night at the Art Center—"Under Water" Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday\, January 27 from 6-8 p.m. to celebrate Under Water at our first Friday Night at the Art Center of 2023! Meet the artists\, enjoy a specialty cocktail\, make art\, and enjoy the sounds of Jon Fammiliant\, Mike Uhila and Ina Kim of Friendly Island. \n Under Water explores the rich undercurrents in the water around us\, through work in a wide range of media by a diverse collection of artists. The exhibition addresses diverse topics around water—what is in our water\, how much we consume\, how climate change has impacted water\, how humans have sought to control water sources and to what effect\, the symbolic role of water in moving people literally and metaphorically. Ultimately\, the artists in the Under Water help to reconnect us with the tremendous beauty and potential of this precious and vital resource.

SUMMARY:Creative Attention: Art and Community Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Creative Attention: Art and Community Restoration\nJanuary 22-May 21\, 2022\nChristine Wong Yap\, Creative Attention: Art and Community Restoration. Digital design. Courtesy of the artist. \nImage description: A digital artwork with a background of light blue at the top\, fading to light pink at the bottom\, and with calligraphy-style text in blue\, purple and pink that reads: “Creative Attention: Art and Community Restoration”. \nAbout the exhibition\nCreative Attention: Art and Community Restoration will feature the work of 18 artists from the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. The exhibition will showcase alternatives to our chaotic world of stress and anxiety\, through practices of mending\, healing\, restoration\, belonging\, sustainability\, and resiliency. \nSome of the work that will be included in the exhibition looks inward—addressing past personal struggles with illness\, addiction\, and loss. Other artists turn their attention outward to connect with those who are suffering and to find solidarity in our shared adversity. Universally\, what begins in the studio alters the life of the artist\, who in turn brings that change to the world. \nArtists in the exhibition will include: Johnna Arnold\, Lynn Beldner\, Wes Bruce\, Caledonia Curry (SWOON)\, Paz de la Calzada\, Angela Hennessy\, Alexander Hernandez\, Jeremiah Jenkins\, Corita Kent\, Tucker Nichols\, Marcel Pardo Ariza\, Maria Paz\, Jessi Rado\, Leah Rosenberg\, Lisa Solomon\, Esther Traugot\, Christine Wong Yap and Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle. \nThe exhibition will feature several site-specific installations\, including: a wall painting by Paz de la Calzada featuring plants collected in nearby City of Palo Alto Community Gardens; a site-specific collection of Flowers for Sick People\, a multimedia art and health project by Tucker Nichols; an immersive installation by Wes Bruce exploring the meditative and healing properties of water; and Expanding Space Project\, a project that combines meditation\, photography\, and social practice by Johnna Arnold. \nThe Creative Attention exhibition is part of a larger initiative that includes artist residencies\, community art therapy workshops\, and wellness programs. Christine Wong Yap will engage local teens and seniors in a residency project focused on places of belonging in Palo Alto and East Palo Alto\, resulting in a site-specific Belonging Map that will be installed in the galleries beginning in March. Marcel Pardo Ariza will work in residence with the Avenidas Senior Center’s Rainbow Collective\, hosting a series of workshops celebrating intergenerational LGBTQ+ personal stories. Art therapist Anh Tran will work in collaboration with community partners Dreamcatchers\, Stevenson House\, and Palo Alto Housing on a series of free art therapy workshops. Free wellness programs will also be presented during the run of the exhibition. \nSpecial events\nIn conjunction with the exhibition\, the Art Center will provide in-person and online programs: \nFriday Night at the Art Center opening reception—Friday\, January 28\, 2022\, 6-8 p.m.\, FREE\nJoin us at the Art Center for a special celebration of Creative Attention. This event will feature exhibition walkthroughs\, a chance to hear from exhibiting artists\, hands-on art activities\, and a specialty cocktail and cash bar provided by the Palo Alto Art Center Foundation. \nCreative Attention Virtual Artist Residency Conversation with Christine Wong Yap and Marcel Pardo Ariza—Friday\, March 4\, 2022\, Zoom\nJoin our Creative Attention artist residents for a virtual presentation about their work and their residencies in conjunction with the project. \nCommunity Day Celebration—Sunday\, April 10\, 2022\, noon-4 p.m.\, FREE\nThis Community Day Celebration will feature hands-on art activities\, a sound bathing activity with Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle\, and a special drag queen performance led by Grace Towers. Bring your worn clothing and repair it in a special workshop with The Mending Collective\, a collective of artists who wish to create a space for people to come together to learn and practice visual mending techniques. \nAcknowledgments\n\nThanks to the support of the Institute of Museum and Library Services\, the Creative Attention exhibition will continue accessibility components initiated by The Art of Disability Culture exhibition\, including audio descriptions and Braille labels. Social narratives will also be provided and available online for visitors with autism. \n\nCreative Attention was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. This project is also supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. SUMMARY:The Black Index Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Palo Alto Art Center is pleased to present The Black Index\, a group exhibition featuring the work of Dennis Delgado\, Alicia Henry\, Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle\, Titus Kaphar\, Whitfield Lovell\, and Lava Thomas. \nThe artists featured in The Black Index build upon the tradition of Black self representation as an antidote to colonialist images. Using drawing\, performance\, printmaking\, sculpture\, and digital technology to transform the recorded image\, these artists question our reliance on photography as a privileged source for documentary objectivity and understanding. Their works offer an alternative practice—a Black index—that still serves as a finding aid for information about Black subjects\, but also challenges viewers’ desire for classification. \nThe works in The Black Index make viewers aware of their own expectations of Black figuration by interrupting traditional epistemologies of portraiture through unexpected and unconventional depictions. These works image the Black body through a conceptual lens that acknowledges the legacy of Black containment that is always present in viewing strategies. The approaches used by Delgado\, Henry\, Hinkle\, Kaphar\, Lovell\, and Thomas suggest understandings of Blackness and the racial terms of our neo-liberal condition that counter legal and popular interpretations and\, in turn\, offer a paradigmatic shift within Black visual culture. \nThe Black Index is curated by Bridget R. Cooks\, Associate Professor\, Department of African American Studies and the Department of Art History\, University of California\, Irvine. Exhibition and tour organized by Sarah Watson\, Chief Curator\, Hunter College Art Galleries\, New York in collaboration with the University Art Galleries at UC Irvine\, Palo Alto Art Center\, and Art Galleries at Black Studies\, University of Texas at Austin. \nLead support for The Black Index is provided by The Ford Foundation with additional support by UCI Confronting Extremism Program\, Getty Research Institute\, Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte\, Carol and Arthur Goldberg\, Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation\, Leubsdorf Fund at Hunter College\, Joan Lazarus Fellowship program at Hunter College\, Pamela and David Hornik\, Loren and Mike Gordon\, University of California Office of the President Multi-campus Research Programs and Initiative Funding\, University of California Humanities Research Institute\, Applied Materials Foundation\, Illuminations: The Chancellor’s Arts and Culture Initiative\, UCI Humanities Center\, Department of African American Studies\, Department of Art History\, The Reparations Project\, and the UC Irvine Black Alumni Chapter.
